Dog Obedience Training
0How should obedience training be undertaken?

- Image via Wikipedia
Dog obedience training should be started as early as possible in the dogs life. If you have a puppy then training should start as soon as the pup is weaned from its mother.
If you have an older dog then the process may be a little harder but will not be impossible.
It is in a dog’s nature to please. In the wild, in their natural state, dogs live in packs. There is always one dog which is the leader or alpha dog. Amongst the dogs, the position of alpha male is not an envied one. It is in the dog’s nature to want to be led. Dogs actually get pleasure and feel a sort of stability in knowing what they are expected to do, they aim to please. They are happiest when they know what they can and can’t do.
For real dog obedience and a deep respect from your dog you can take the dog’s nature and work around it. You must become your dogs leader or alpha male. this will entail acting as the leader of the pack. For example, if your dog is lying in your path do not step out over it or around it. Push it aside with your foot, oblige it to move out of your way. this reinforces to the dog that you are the leader of the pack. When you eat, allow your dog to watch you eat, if it starts to ask for food or get near as you are eating then you may well growl or snap at your dog. Literally growl. If this behaviour is unacceptable to you then you may tell the dog off which will also be interpreted as a sort of growl. Once you have finished eating then you can feed your dog. This is how it is in the pack. the leader eats then the rest of the pack feeds on what the leader has left.
Little things like this should be reinforced daily to remind your dog that you are still the leader. your dog will be very happy to have you as a leader and will give you nothing but respect. It is a great burden for a dog to be the leader and if possible will prefer you to adopt the role.
If the dog feels it is without a leader then it will reluctantly tale on the role itself because someone has to be the leader and if it doesn’t see you as its leader then your dog will attempt to become your leader and you will end up feeding the dog when IT tells you its hungry and having the dog take you for walks and not vice versa.

When you bring your new puppy into the house you should at first limit its run of the house. You should limit its ‘teritory’. To have the run of the whole house would be to much at the beginning. When it comes to house training, giving the dog a smaller territory will help.
There are several methods you can use to successfully house train your puppy. One of the most will known methods is the paper training method. This involves putting several layers of newspaper in an area of your house. You may also want to place some layers of paper in a certain area outside (weather permitting). you may well have to anchor the four corners with stones or other weight.
Observe your puppy and you will notice that instinctively, before it relieves itself it will go to the borders of its territory, the walls and start sniffing, looking for a place to go. It might even start turning in circles. This tell tale behaviour will soon become apparent and if you are aware at the time you will be able to catch it in time. Take your puppy, give it the command, ‘OUTSIDE’ and take it immediately outside to the paper you laid down previously. As soon as it has finished then you should praise the puppy telling it ‘GOOD OUTSIDE’.
If the puppy doesn’t manage to do anything then wait a few minutes and then bring it inside. D however keep an eye on it as it will probably need to go soon.
Also keep an eye on the dog just after it wakes up, even if it has only been a short nap. The dog will almost definitely need to go upon awaking.
You will obviously not be around all of the time to check on the puppy, you will sometimes find little surprises around the room. When this happens, or when you catch the dog 0in the act’ then you should take the puppy to the ‘accident spot’, show it what it has done and stay sternly ‘BAD PUPPY – NO’ and then plant the pup on its paper. After a few times of doing this the puppy will start to associate and will always head towards the paper to do relieve itself. If the weather permits and you are constantly taking the puppy outside to do its business then in time it will approach the door when it needs to go, it may even scratch at the door or start to whine or bark to get you to open the door.
House training your puppy or potty training a dog as with all aspects of dog training will be much more successful if positive reinforcement is used, that is of rewarding the dog when it performs correctly instead of punishing it for misbehaving.
Dog Tricks
0The learning of dog training tricks is not a necessary part of a dog’s training however it does help with the bond between the dog and the owner. It also helps the dog to relate to the owner as its leader and not the other way around.
There are some breeds that have better aptitude when it comes to learning tricks than others but in general, all dogs are capable of learning tricks, it just requires a little bit of patience and persistence on the part of the owner.
The tricks you are to teach to your dog should be taught depending on the size and agility of the dog. Larger dogs find it more difficult to sit up and walk on their hind legs for example than the smaller breeds.
If you are to teach your dog tricks then it is best to start at an early age. The playful enthusiasm of a young puppy can be taken advantage of. Younger dogs will look upon the learning of tricks as fun and play and will therefore learn quicker. What ever the age of your dog you should make the learning of tricks fun and playful so that both dog and owner can enjoy the process.
Punishment should be kept to a minimum and positive reinforcement using praise and treats should be adopted. If punishment is used the dog will learn but will learn slower and will not enjoy the practice of tricks. You can observe some dogs performing tricks and they really seem to be enjoying it, these are always the dog that best perform.
You should however be sure that the dog doesn’t become over excited and boisterous during the learning of the tricks. Frequent repetition in a good natured tone is what is required to persuade and coax your dog into doing certain things for which he will receive praise for.
Enjoy your time teaching your dog the tricks and the dog will also have fun. Try not to teach it tricks that will be physically impossible or difficult its particular breed and the dog should learn the trick in a relative short time. Repetition and enthusiasm are the keys to the successful dog trick training.

0Dog Training Tips
If you start to attend classes in a dog training school you will soon realize that there is a lot more to dog training than meets the eye. The most effective dog trainers and authors understand the psyche of the dog. They understand how the dog reacts in it’s natural ‘wild pack’ and understand how the community and hierarchy of the pack is structured. Your pet dog at home instinctively speaking is a member of your pack and the best way to train your dog is by understanding it nature as do the top trainers and authors.
I’m going to present you with a few tips to guide you in the process of training your dog, however I would still highly recommend that you either take your dog to obedience classes or get hold of one of the many quality Dog Training Books or videos available for download on the internet.
If you do decide to buy a dog training ebook or video then we have put together a Dog Training Book review page highlighting the best of these training materials to minimise your chances of stumbling upon publications that give erroneous advice – also consider downloading your FREE copy of our ebook, The Top 5 Dog Training Commands
You need to be consistent in your training. If you are training your dog to do something a certain way then it should do it that way always. Pick a training method and stick to it. Don’t change training methods halfway though the process. Dogs can learn extremely quickly but they can also become easily confused. Try to get some training in every day until you consider your dog to be completely trained.
Training sessions should be fun and short. Don’t force the dog once it has responded a few times. Always reward your dog preferably with a treat and always with a lot of fuss. Once the dog is starting to perform then the reward can be eased off. Constant rewarding is counter productive. A period without rewards is good and then every so often reward for good performance will stimulate the dog more. This is known as intermittent reinforcement.
Try to match your dog’s character. Every dog has its own unique character just as we do. If you have a lively dog then you should try and match this in it’s training sessions and be as lively and enthusiastic as possible. This will help the dog to bond with you and in the end the dog will really be trying to please. If you have a timid, scared or shy dog then you should still be lively yourself but take into account that just as with a shy person the dog will take more time in demonstrating what it can do. This doesn’t mean that it isn’t learning just that it isn’t showing that it has learned. You should understandingly be tolerant and try to encourage the dog to come out of itself.
Empathize with your dog. Make your commands consistent, clear and try to incorporate visual commands. Your dog is intelligent and understands your intentions however it does not understand language. A good example here is when you go to a foreign country and hear the people gabbling away in a foreign tongue. You have no idea what they are talking about but if someone wants to communicate with you, they will look at you, maybe point or make a gesture, and speak slowly and clearly and you will most probably understand what they are getting at. This is how your dog will perceive you when you talk to it.
These are just a few guidelines to training and I would highly recommend that you get professional help before you begin your training whether it be a book, video or from a dog training school, if you plan to be training a dog to heal or training your dog to walk on a leash or if you need to teach your dog to do tricks.

Dog Training Advice – Get to know your dog
0
The best dog training advice I can give to anyone is to “get to know your dog and have it be pleased to obey your commands”.
Dog training doesn’t have to be difficult at all. You see it is in the nature of the dog to want to please. In the wild, the natural state of the dogs is to live in a pack. Each pack has its leader, its alpha dog. This is a position that isn’t suited to all dogs and in fact the majority of dogs will prefer to let another take the position of leader of the pack and sit back and be led. In any situation where there is more than one dog then there must always be one who will have to take the position of alpha dog. Sometimes this is unenthusiastically undertaken but it is a position that must be filled.
So to establish a better line of communication between you and your dog and to get the dog to be more obedient you have to take on the role of lead dog in your own little pack, which will be your family. This will not be that difficult to do as you will be the one providing the food for the pack. You dog will in most cases be more than pleased to relinquish the role of alpha dog to you if you haven’t already taken up that role. Some simple imitation of the pack behavior will reinforce your position daily and will keep you dog in the position of obeying you and of being led which is probably what the dog wants most of all.
Some examples of pack behavior are at feeding time for example. The leader of the pack always eats first and the other dogs stay back and once he has finished then they will take what’s left of the pickings. you can reinforce this by giving the dog its food only after you have eaten your own food so the dog can see you eating and then know that it will be fed afterwards.
Another little behavior pattern is that all of the dogs will always move out of the way of the lead dog. So if your dog is sleeping in the middle of the floor then do not walk around them, gently but firmly move them out of the way with your feet, they will move over and curl up somewhere else and you have just reinforced that you are the alpha dog in your own little family pack.
Making yourself the ‘boss’ in the relationship with your dog is doing a favor for the dog and for you and you will find that it becomes so much easier to train your dog once this social hierarchy has been established.
